About the Artist: Maya Victorine
|
Maya is currently on an adventure to seek out the thresholds of simple living, spontaneous movement, and the sensation of swooning (aka spiritual experience).
Travel Report: Rural India proved to be a fertile edge zone, within which one can resonate with nature, history, village life, the internet, and the intense activity of buses and cities. January and February were spent with an international group of Butoh dancers, and March and April held personal creative time and presenting performances and workshops for youth in the villages of Karnataka. May was spent in Sri Lanka. June and July were spent volunteering on a coffee farm and working on the Sound Cafe idea and website. August, September, and October held performances at a festival in Hungary, butoh study in Serbia, butoh residency in Rotterdam with performances at several community events, and teaching a three day butoh workshop. Maya is currently experimenting with sound and video, to help supplement butoh in expresssion. Maya comes to this moment with a background in Embodied Meditation stemming from Taoist Energywork, Core Shamanism, Tantra, Osho, and Butoh. Leading workshops and private sessions, Maya seeks to help people dance their own path and find true authentic and useful experience. Development of video and audio meditations that can be available to folks back home and also around the world is in the works. Maya's work is also concerned with the environment and our relationship with it. Developing eco-resonance, a tantric connection and respect for entities of the wild has been a large part of the work thus far, and is presented in the videos through butoh dance. Eco Angst, a disresonance with modern life and its ignorance and disrespect are also present, both in choosing how to live and the choices we make around energy and consumption, questioning all of the assumptions we have about what we need, and also in artistic expression. This expression will be developed more while in the city of Bangalore. Please support this project and get linked to its harvest by contributing to [email protected] via paypal. Contact me!
